Husband and I have started an annual tradition of heading up the shore for a weekend getaway in the winter. With no holidays (for which we get off of work) to look forward to until the end of May, we decided to make our own. This year we extended the weekend to four days and spent 3 of them hiking and showshoeing some amazing sections of the Superior Hiking Trail. Continue reading A Weekend of Hiking and Snowshoeing
Living in Duluth has its perks. One of them is being within day-trip distance of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Last year was the first time since 2009 that Lake Superior froze safely enough to allow visitors to the ice formations that take over the sandstone cliffs. We were among the first visitors last year, and we made sure to go “opening day” this year too. Continue reading 2015 Apostle Islands Ice Cave Trip
On a recent spontaneous weekend getaway we took a day trip to Temperance River State Park. We meant to just walk a little with the dog on the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, but ended up hiking all over the place. This was probably ill-advised since neither of us had hiking shoes on, it’s January, and the temperature was falling steadily, but who cares? Live in the moment, right? My husband, on the very good advice of his father, has decided that we need to make a point to do one new thing together every month. It doesn’t have to be crazy, it can be as simple as going to a new restaurant, but it has to be something that we have not done together before. Thus begins my new series “Something New.” To kick things off in January we went to the Mainland Ice Caves of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore near Cornucopia, WI.
I’m not saying I’ll be able to post as often as I did when my Daily Duluth project first started—I’ve gotten lazy and no longer walk to work, although I know I should. But I do miss taking pictures of the awesomeness that is Duluth so here’s the first of, I hope, a renewed regular posting of photographs of and around Duluth, MN.

Yesterday the Lake was pretty clear; some ice around the lighthouses. This morning it was completely filled with ice flow.
On Feb. 19th there was a huge wind storm. My husband and I went down to the shore to have an adventure and what an adventure it was! One day later the wind was still blowing and creating quite the commotion on the water so I took some more pictures. Then the wind changed a bit and the waves got smaller, but the ice moved in. Then the wind changed again, and the Lake changed again, and throughout the day there was a different scene out my window. I took pictures every so often to document it.
