Last weekend I drove up to Scenic State Park, about 2 hours northwest of Duluth, with my dog to bask in the glory of peak-season fall colors. I had checked the Minnesota DNR’s website to see where the best colors were happening and was pleased to find out one of the state parks I hadn’t been to yet was smack-dab in the middle of it. On a recent spontaneous weekend getaway we took a day trip to Temperance River State Park. We meant to just walk a little with the dog on the Gitchi-Gami State Trail, but ended up hiking all over the place. This was probably ill-advised since neither of us had hiking shoes on, it’s January, and the temperature was falling steadily, but who cares? Live in the moment, right? Every year we go camping with my extended family. There’s usually around 10-15 people there so we have been getting group campsites when we can. This year we picked Great River Bluffs State Park near Winona, MN. The key reasons we picked it were that it is somewhat equidistant from all of us, there are hiking trails, and the group sites were actually available. Last year we went to Perrot State Park, close to nearby Trempealeau, WI. I gotta say, the hiking is better on the MN side 🙂
I have camped in Gooseberry Falls State Park once, but have visited several times. It’s one of my favorite places as I always seem to somehow end up being there when there’s not a huge crowd. My Husband and I camped here last fall at the end of September during the week and it was PERFECT. It was a little chilly and windy, but we had such a great time anyway. The campground is not too far from Lake Superior and the hiking is wonderful. Continue reading Gooseberry Falls State Park
I was on my own for the 4th this year so I decided to head up to Tettegouche State Park, where I had never been before, to do some hiking. It’s about an hour and a half drive north from Duluth and both Gooseberry Falls and Split Rock Light House State Parks are on the way. Up until then I had only been as far north as Split Rock Lighthouse so this would be an adventure! Continue reading Three Minnesota State Parks in One Day
Went for a little hike in Jay Cooke State Park. Beautiful trails, gorgeous day.
